The Tour of Mull has built something of a reputation for showing off immaculate rally cars of every type and age, and David Johnston’s superb 2.0 litre 16v Golf GTi is no exception.


Owner/Driver - David Johnston

David built the Golf to compete in tarmac rallies, prominently the Tour Of Mull Rally & The Jim Clark Memorial Rally. David can also be seen competing on the odd sprint or two and attended the Mount Stuart Motorsport Classic on the Isle of Bute.

Car - VW Golf 16v GTi

Built in 1998 from nearly standard spec to current spec over the past 8 years. Reshelled in 2004 incorporating new rollcage and suspension.  

ENGINE: Standard 2.0ltr Audi block using 1.8 Ibiza con-rods with racetech bolts, gas flowed and ported 16 valve cylinder head, Kent rally cams timed by vernier pulley to give over 200bhp.

FUELLING: Badger 5 'Direct to Head' throttle bodies managed by DTA E48 EXP fully mapped engine management system.

BODY: 1.3 Golf shell (no sunroof) with Safety Devices multipoint weld in rollcage with full triangulation to strut towers, lightweight doors, poly carbonate windows, 2 x Cobra Imola II lightweight competition seats, Willans 6 point harnesses, hand held and plumbed in fire extinguishers, Momo Corse steering wheel, spa design duel gauges and rev counter, Coralba C Giant rally computer. Aluminum sump guard, fibreglass fuel tank guard.


TRANSMISSION: Quaife 6 speed gearbox with dogged engagement, Quaife torque biasing diff, driving through a 5.091 final drive, using a Golf Rallye clutch and standard drive shafts.VW Motorsport gear lever, cables and internal selectors.

SUSPENSION: Proflex 3 way adjustable shock absorbers front and rear, adjustable for high and low speed bump and rebound. Neuspeed adjustable anti - rollbars.

BRAKES: Willwood Supalite 4 pot callipers with 310 x 32mm discs up front, std Golf Gti rear discs, vertical lever hydraulic handbrake.
