Poll: Are You Going?

Travelling to Mull

Jan 03,2006 by Julian Grattidge

There are a number of routes to get from the mainland over to Mull. You can catch ferries from Kilchoan to Tobermory, Lochaline to Fishnish, but by far the most popular (and easiest) route is to catch the Caledonian MacBrayne ferry from Oban to Craignure.

The ferry, aptly named the Isle of Mull, measures around 90 meters and can accommodate up to eighty cars and almost one thousand passengers · not that you’ll ever see that many! With an operating speed of around 15 knots the journey from Oban to Craignure takes around 45 minutes depending on conditions.

Ferries run on a regular basis throughout the year and during the rally the amount of crossings are increased to cater for the increased volume of traffic. Each passenger travelling in your party will need a ticket, and you will also need a ticket for the car. Prices are seasonal and the vehicle cost depends on the length of the vehicle and whether you are towing a tailor, etc. Full details for all Caledonian MacBrayne services routes and tariffs are available via: http://www.calmac.co.uk/

If there is room on the ferry you can just turn up at the port and purchase a ticket but if you are intending to visit during the rally it’s advisable to book both outward bound and return tickets well in advance as demand is extremely high.

You are required to arrive at the port 30 minutes prior to departure but to be honest we’ve turned up with just minutes to spare on several occasions and have had no problems. It’s always nice to arrive early when possible though as there are a few nice places worth visiting in Oban and furthermore, it pays to be one of the first on the ferry because this means you will be first off at Craignure, which helps no end for beating all the ferry traffic up the Island roads!
